I need a lighter companion to do my work-related stuff. This may sound a little crazy, but my 10.1-inch netbook which weighs about 1.5 kilograms already feels heavy to carry on a daily basis. Again, those who have 14-inch laptops would surely frown upon that last statement. But, hey if you happen to stumble upon a number of cheap quad-core Android tablets priced under Php 4,000, you would also want reasons to have a netbook alternative.

So I was looking for the cheapest tablets because I consider myself frugal, and found these amazing gadgets. Read on to know more about them.

CloudFone CloudPad 700qTV

This is one is a gem. Aside from the fact that is runs Android 4.4 Kitkat out ot the box, it has 3G and dual sim to boot, an 8GB internal memory, and a mobile TV. How cool is that for Php 3,499?

The reason that it has to be quad-core is that I have tried dual-core and suffered through all the lags and bumps while browsing through apps and playing even the basic games. I am done with that so quad-core is like the minimum processor power I am rooting for.

I found a lot of tablets under Php 4K but most of them are still dual-core so obviously, they didn't make it in the list. The last one, I am kinda hesitant to post because of the lower RAM capacity but hey it's still quad-core!

CloudPad 707qw

For the price of Php 2,499, you are getting Android 4.4 Kitkat, 5MP-2MP cam combo, and an 8GB internal storage capacity. That's awesome right? The only prob is the RAM but well, if you are not really into games, and just want to hav a tab for browsing, this might do the trick.
  • Android 4.4 Kitkat
  • WiFi
  • 7.0" Touchscreen
  • 5MP Rear
  • 2MP Front Camera
  • 1.3 GHz Quad Core Processor
  • ROM: 8GB
  • RAM: 512MB
  • P 2,499
The CM Fusion Bolt is the winner when it comes to display but I am really curious about that CloudPad 700qTV because well, it has TV and has better set of cameras. I think an actual hands-on is needed to see if the things on paper translate well on the actual usage experience.

It turns out that the 64.8C.4G teaser means that the Cherry Mobile Cosmos One Plus would sport a 64GB microSD-expandable 32GB internal storage, a 2.0 GHz octa-core processor, and a dual-LTE capability.

Software giant Google Inc. has announced the release of Android Lollipop in June 2014 but it seems that the roll out of the OS for various Android smartphones is a bit slower than expected. But before you decide to upgrade your Android Kitkat or any lower version to Lollipop, let's take a look at the amazing new things we can with our Android smartphones using the latest sweet version of the operating system.

According to the official Android website, the development team has put on a lot of effort to give Android users the best smartphone experience with use of Android Lollipop. These are just some of the nifty enhancement users can enjoy.

Sadly, the launch today takes place in China so we have to wait a little while (if ever) before Oppo U3 - Oppo's newest phablet, hits the Philippine shores. While we do that, let's check out the spec sheet below to get to know this device better.

  • 5.9-inch 1080p display

No word yet if its Gorilla or Dragontrail scratch-resistant glass that's being used on the screen, but I think it sports Gorilla 3, because that's the trend now. Pricing is yet to be revealed but with this kind of specs, I think Oppo U3 is gonna be sold within the 12K - 18K range in the Philippines.

Lenovo P90 is strong in all aspects: clear and huge display, decent camera, long-lasting battery, and huge internal storage. And that's on top of Android Lollipop, 64-bit quad-core, and 2GB RAM. This could surely give the Vibe series a run for its money.

After the huge success of its Zenfone series, specifically the Asus Zenfone 5, ASUS has done it again with the upcoming release of its latest smartphone, the Asus Zenfone 2. What's so special about this device? Check out the spec sheet below for you to find out.

Here's the Asus Zenfone 2 specs for your perusal.
  • Intel 64-bit Atom 1.8GHz Z3560 quadcore / 2.3GHz z3580 quadcore processor

  • Android 5.0 Lollipop with ZenUI
  • 3000mAh battery
The specs sheet looks stunning and it comes with an unbelievably low price of Php 8,965! How is that for a powerhouse? Well, at least for the 1.8GHz-2GB version that is. The 2.3GHz-4GB version is priced along the 15K range but still, even with the lower end alternative, you still get a lot of juice in its internals specially LTE, 16Gb storage, and excellent dual cameras; not to mention the battery capacity of 3000mAh which could at least last a whole day of heavy use.

The amazing thing about this too is that Asus Zenfone 2 is finally able to make use of the 64-bit architecture with its 4GB RAM and Android Lollipop combo. And what a good-looking phone it is too! This baby is coming out in March so you might want to hold off buying a new phone till then for this one.

Samsung smallest yet still-powerful A-Series smartphone along with Samsung Galaxy A5, and Samsung Galaxy A7, is the Samsung Galaxy A3. This babyjust might be the most expensive 4.5-incher to hit the market so far and it should be since it sports a full-metal body.

Aside from its full metal design, the Galaxy A3 also sports features that cater to the selfie generation with its 5MP front camera. Internet savvy folks would also love the fact that this device already supports LTE. And you could never go wrong with a 16GB internal memory which is a necessity especially if you are into installing lots of your fave apps.

From Left to Right: Galaxy A3, Galaxy A5, and Galaxy A7

Check out the Samsung Galaxy A3 specs below:
  • 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor

Priced at Php 16,990 when it hits the Philippines, the Samsung Galaxy A3 is capable device with bright AMOLED screen and LTE on board.

Samsung just released the three A-Series smartphones that all have full metal bodies. Samsung Galaxy A5 is not as packed as its older brother Samsung Galaxy A7, but it has enough ammunition to make it a worthy contender for the best 5-inch smartphone in 2015.

From Left to Right: A3, A5, A7

Check out the Samsung Galaxy A5 specs below for a closer look.
  • 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor

  • 139.3 x 69.7 x 6.7mm
Samsung Galaxy A5 is sold at Php 19,999 in the Philippines. Still a bit pricey but that's how Samsung devices are priced in the market anyway, so I guess loyal Samsung users won't mind.

Samsung Galaxy A7 is the largest among Samsung's latest A-Series smartphones which sport a full metal body. The A7 sports Samsung's trademark AMOLED display that guarantees excellent display quality. Partner that with a highly elegant metal body, this device is going to be a beautiful piece to have and to hold.

From Left to Right: A3, A5, and A7

Check out the Samsung Galaxy A7 specs listed below:
  • Samsung octa-core Exynos processor
  • 1.8GHz cortex A5-cores, 1.3GHz cortex-A53 cores

  • 5MP front camera
  • Dual-Sim
  • 3G, LTE
  • Android 4.4 Kitkat
  • 2600mAh battery
  • 150.9 x 75.9 x 6.3mm
Samsung Galaxy A7 is sold at Php 24,990. It is a high-end device indeed and its a looker that's for sure but with the proliferation of more affordable smartphones with almost the same specs, I wonder if the A7 could make it big in the highly competitive phablet market.

Asus has made a great move with the release of its Zenfone series. Sporting an Intel processor with HyperThreading technology, and its well-known Pixelmaster camera that boasts clearer pictures even during the night, the Asus Zenfone 5, the middle child of the series and the most popular among them has been selling like hotcakes since its release in the last quarter of 2014.

Zenfone's sleek design, coupled with its minimalistic yet stylish ZenUI have contributed a lot for the Asus Zenfone 5 to be considered as one of the most successful stories in the 5-inch categories of Android smartphones. Cherry Mobile is consistent in making waves in the smartphone industry and its newest Android octa-core offering, the Cherry Mobile Me Vibe is surely going to become a huge hit. The specs look good, though the smaller battery capacity is understandable for its price range.

December 2014 was the month of midrange smartphones with premium build quality and strong internals to have been offered in a huge price cut to the delight of the masses. There is Microsoft Lumia 535, the first Nokia Lumia windows phone with the Microsoft label on the device itself. As mentioned, MyPhone Iceberg also goes on sale and this happened actually alongside MyPhone Vortex last month. The new price tag is  Php 5,999 and that is a huge cut considering that this device was originally sold at Php 11,988.

To explain why this is such a good deal, check out the MyPhone Iceberg specifications below:

  • 1.2 GHz Quad Core MediaTek MT6589 Processor, Cortex-A7

MyPhone is a local smartphone brand that has a strong following among Filipino mobile enthusiasts because of their respectable lineup of affordable yet stylish and bang-for-the-buck handsets. Last December 26, 2014, the company has decided to put one of its premium built Android smartphones on sale with a huge price slash of at least 50%. That phone is the MyPhone Agua Vortex, which is originally priced at Php 12,388.00. That's good news to all who are longing to buy a great midrange smartphone without having to break the bank.
The beauty that is Myphone Agua Vortex is on sale until supply last, and the last time I checked, the huge sale is still going on! If not for my latest purchase of Microsoft Lumia 535, I would have taken consideration of buying this one, although, my motivation to buy the latter was to try out a Windows phone for a change. Anyway, this could have literally changed my mind, had I known about this earlier.
Here are the amazing specifications of MyPhone Agua Vortex:
  • 1.2GHz quad-core CPU, MediaTek MT6589
  • PowerVR SGX544 GPU
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB internal storage, microSD card slot (up to 32GB)

Its  huge 16GB internal storage and a great pair of cameras are enough to convince anyone that this is indeed a steal.

One of the most exciting smartphone updates towards the end of 2014 was the emergence of the first smartphone from Microsoft carrying the company label and that is the Microsoft Lumia 535. It is a mid-range smartphone with a surprisingly entry-level price. I am a proud owner of one so I can say that this phone really delivers the goods quite well, and this is coming from an Android user for three years.

Microsoft Lumia 535 got its name from its amazing features; that is, a 5-inch IPC qHD display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3, a 5-megapixel rear camera with AF, and a 5-megapixel front camera for some near perfect selfies!

Other stunning features of the phone include:
  • 1.2 Ghz Quad Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor

  • Dual-sim
  • 3G, HSPDA

Aside from these amazing specs, the phone is retailed at only Php 5,990.00 in the Philippines. How nice is that? And it does help that the phone is a looker too. So, if you are thinking of trying out a Windows phone for a change, you can never go wrong with Microsot Lumia 535.
